Disposable razors have made tremendous strides over the last few years.  With flex ball technology, lubricating strips, multi blades, etc., there are a few characteristics to keep in mind when deciding on a purchase.

Cost:  True disposable razors are the most cost effective.  These razors are meant to be thrown away including the handle.  Keep this in mind – Razor blades are expensive and the more blades each unit has generally the more expensive. 

Brand:  Since you will most likely be shaving your face and other sensitive areas I definitely recommend a trusted reputable brand.  In this case it’s worth it spending the extra dollar or two otherwise you might end up with a face full of cuts.  

Lubrication:  Some high end disposable razors now have lubricating strips, which reduce irritation and help moisturize shaved areas.  

Frequency Of Use:  This will definitely effect which type of blades to purchase.  Generally, if you shave every day then each cartridge should last about a week.  This does however depend on what you are shaving.  If you’re shaving your head every day then a cartridge will probably only last three or four days.  The blades will still be satisfactory, but there will definitely be a noticeable difference in the ease of use with a fresh cartridge. 

Gillette Fusion 5 ProShield Chill

Pros:  The Gillette Fusion 5 ProShield Chill is my favorite disposable razor, although it’s only the razor cartridge that you replace and not the handle.  This razor contains 5 blades, which Gillette states are it’s thinnest yet.  While some razors have lubricating strips, this one has lubricating strips before and after the blades as well as a precision trimmer.  The flex ball technology is also user friendly, allowing a closer shave to the different contours of a mans face.  

Cons:  The only real con is that I have to change the cartridges often since I shave my head along with facial hair.  This has a direct impact on the cost as an 8 cartridge refill costs about $30 on Amazon.

Schick Hydro 5

Pros:  The Schick Hydro is another high quality razor with lubricating strips and a flexible head.  One of the main pros of the Hydro is the price.  A Hydro 5 razor plus 17 cartridges retails for around $33 or about half the cost of the Gillette Fusion 5 cartridges.  Many have even claimed that the Schick Hydro 5 is a more comfortable shave than the Gillette Fusion 5 series.  I must admit that it’s pretty comparable in terms of comfort and function and the price definitely makes the Schick Hydro 5 a top razor.

Bic Flex 5

Pros:  The Bic Flex 5 is one of the most cost effective disposable razors combing quality with a reasonable price.  This true disposable razor has a 40 degree pivoting head and a balancing sphere for better control.  The Flex 5 also has precision trimming blades for those hard to reach places.  The 5 blades individually adjust depending on the shaving surface to give a more comfortable shave with less irritation.  

Cons:  Each unit is completely disposable.  When the quality of the shave, which will vary from person to person is no longer satisfactory the whole unit gets thrown away.  Of course, this isn’t really a con and is subject to preference, but if space is an issue and you like to have an ample supply of blades just in case then a razor with a reusable handle will most likely be more appropriate.  

In general, you can’t go wrong with any of these choices.  We have reviewed all three and while the Gillette Fusion 5 ProShield Chill is my personal favorite the other two choices are similar in quality, yet at least half the price.
