The latest installation of the Samsung Galaxy series arrives next month (April 29) and it appears to be a game-changer. The new Samsung Galaxy Fold is the first folding phone on market. It includes a larger 7.3 inch multi-functional screen while still maintaining the portability of a pocket-sized device. Tech enthusiast are understandably ecstatic about this. App-makers are busy programming compatible software–this will certainly not be a return to your old clam shell flip phone.
The whole development process has been shrouded in secrecy for years and has lead to a lot of speculation. Insiders are just now getting their hands on actual test Galaxy Fold models. Early reviews on the Galaxy fold are positive, a great deal of thought went into the design process and how to make this better for users. The result: six, yes, that’s right, six, cameras on this phone giving users various high-def options from selfie to panorama, as well as many other updated design features.
(Both 4G and 5G versions will be available)
Competitors like Huawei, Lucent, and, of course the tech behemoth in Cupertino are all due to release their own versions of the foldable device later this year. Samsung has packed in the functionality to set itself a part from the pack, however. Features like wireless PowerShare allow the phone to charge itself and another device with wireless charging capability (Say the Samsung Smartwatch that retails at $350).
The Samsung Galaxy Fold sticker price starts at $1,980 is the only factor that may keep customers from queuing in lines wrapped around the corner. This is a shock to many tech insiders, especially after the release of the $1,000 phone by Apple in the last iPhone version. The Fold will, however, include a wireless pair of earbuds, so, there’s that.
The Galaxy Fold opens inward (like a book) using a hinge and interlocking gear system at the center. This is in contrast to Huawei’s Mate X and other models coming on market. Those phones use an outward opening function with a single seamless screen. The models will have to compete head-to-head in the open market for a while before consumers ultimately decide which is more practical and declare them the market leader. For now, Samsung has thoroughly damage tested its version opening and closing the panels 200,000 times (5 years, if opened 100 times per day) without issue.
Rest assured this is not the latest gimmick to lure customers into an upgrade and therefore recycle the market with the latest versions. The 7.3 inch OLED screen and bendable polymer layer are actually 50% thinner than the average screen on market. By all accounts, this looks to be a major shift in mobile technology. In other words, new models with expanding and pull out screens are on the horizon, and that looks to just be the start.
Google’s Android 9 Pie has been adapted for the new Samsung Galaxy Fold and does not disappoint. In all Samsung product tests and test versions just released recently display a picture perfect transition from the cover display to the open panel. Additionally, the multi-functionality is remarkable with users able to watch a YouTube video, send a WhatsApp text and have an article open simultaneously on different portions of the screen.
In this first of its generation mobile device the Samsung Galaxy Fold is sure to be a conversation starter, and turn plenty of heads.
